Technological skills Ive gained

In this post I have mentioned and explained in depth how I used media technologies in my constructing, research, planning and evaluation stages of my music video. I have created a powtoon to present this information. I have further reflected on how it has helped me and what I have learned through each digital technology I have used.

On the whole, my use of media technologies has helped me create a more interesting and professional final piece of coursework and blog.

Evaluation – Point 3

Audience feedback & what I have learned

For my audience feedback, I wanted to collect information from a varied source from all ages and geographical regions. This is why I chose to use as many different social media platforms as I could, to reach out to a larger audience. My demographic for the video ranged from teenagers/young adults, working groups, to people of all ages, which was really interesting to read. Further, it was interesting for me to see if people from different cultural backgrounds had different opinions about my product. On the whole, I am really glad that so many people responded to my music video and that my figures of the amount of people who viewed my video is so large. Having received both positive and negative feedback, has given me a chance to look at my video from someone else’s perspective and take further considerations for the future.

Facebook wall post:

Facebook is clearly my most popular source of feedback. This is because it allows you to reach out to people from all ages whereas Instagram and Snapchat is primarily focused on teenagers and young adults. Having a look at peoples comments, I came upto a conclusion that Facebook has been proved to be the best social media source to gain audience feedback. This especially applies to the large extent of adult viewers. My parents had further shared my post where their family friends responded to my clip. Regarding the actual feedback itself, most of my comments have been positive, however some stating areas where I could improve my video to make it even better. This has helped me identify areas Ive slightly ‘lacked’ upon.

Snapchat publicity:

Snapchat is a really useful platform to publish something very quickly as users are usually very active. This especially applies to the younger crowd people (16-25). As you can see below I have 123 views on my story, I had added the youtube link on my story so that people have easy access to the video.

Private Messages:

For those who did not want to give me feedback publicly decided to private message me which I have shared below in a slideshare form. I feel this is useful way of getting a more ‘personal’ opinion as people are more honest and less hesitant to say things.

Youtube Stats:

Overall, I have been very satisfied with the popularity and views I have received through youtube. With views ranging up to 309, clearly suggests that I have tried my best to gain as much publicity with my music video. The watch time is also pretty high (575 mins) which is positive. Furthermore, the varied geographical regions shows how my music video has been watched all around the world, giving me more interesting feedback opportunities as they are from different cultural backgrounds. I have had messages from people from all continents including Asia, Europe, United States and Australia. The only element I expected more outcome from is the average view duration. With my music video being slightly longer compared to other people (exceeds 4 mins), I feel this could have been the reason behind this. Surprisingly, someone disliked my video (hater alert) but unfortunately I cannot find out who this is as youtube doesn’t allow me to do so. Had I found out, I would’ve asked them why they thought so, so that I could make improvements for next time.

This is a detailed emailed I received from a very close friend. I have appreciated her feedback and taken it into consideration since she is very experienced with ‘visuals’. She takes Alevel Art and Photography hence she has the ‘eye’ to spot specific things that not everyone else may spot. What I found most useful from her response was that she asked me to change my title in the beginning since it looks like a typical iMovie transition and to make my storyline a bit more clear.

Evaluation – Point 2

Analysis of how effective is the combination of my main product and my ancillary texts

In my presentation below I have analysed the use of synergy between my music video, digipak and advert. Having learned and seen examples of effective use of synergy (e.g. coldplay), I have realised the importance of it. Most professional music artists use strong synergy throughout the products to create a distinctive image for themselves. It relates to how an artists star image is shown. Synergy not only allows a particular artist to stand out however it links in with the viewers visual interaction with the band/artist as it gives them an identity. Ive learned how important it is as a marketing tool in the music industry. In the last slide, I have reflected upon the production of my 3 products by explaining my choices.

Evaluation – Point 1

Ways In which my Media product uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media products

For this task I have explored ways in which my final music video was influenced by real media texts. I have posted a directors commentary with segments examples of real media texts against my music video. I have used various artists for inspiration, and have  commented on how and why I took inspiration from them and applied it to my final work. I have further spoken about how this developed my own ideas and ways in which i incorporated different artists work to create a greater outcome.

Although, artists have provided my music video with a great influence, I have also applied my own ideas, prior knowledge and new knowledge I’ve gained throughout my 2 years of study in Alevel Media. I believe I have created a very individual and in my opinion, fresh piece of media. I challenged the classic indie ideas of having dark, romantic lighting and love stories, and created a story about a girl reminiscing her bittersweet memories with her lover who is no more existent. My music video combined a lot of different ideas and forms of real media texts, but what I created and how I compiled my final outcome has led to a very interesting mix of different ideas and visuals. My only regret is that I did not manage my time efficiently, had I done so, I would’ve been able to make further improvements to the actual video itself. However, this is how you learn for next time!

Second Edit

Here is my second edit to my music video. Though I have only fully edited unto 2 mins of the video, I chose to upload this onto my blog to show my progression before my final piece comes altogether. I feel that I have really developed my rough edit as I have now incorporated all the scenes I am going to be using. As of now, my footage is longer than the actual song itself however I know this needs to be narrowed down choosing the best shots. I have further also added the required filters as per my plan, use of overlays through the opacity tool and use of transitions. I have further also tightening my shots together so that the lip-syncing is more coherent (first 2 mins only). I am looking forward for my whole composition to come together as a whole.

Now for my final edit, I know that I already have the correct shots in hand as overall, I am very happy with the footage. I just need to make sure the lip syncing and the visuals fit together with the remainder of the song.
